Fighting Blindness was formed in 1983 by a small group of families affected by Retinal Degenerative Conditions such as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) and Macular Degeneration. Fighting Blindness is committed to finding treatments and cures for all forms of blindness through the funding and promotion of Irish research. Since its inception Fighting Blindness has been very much involved in the international effort. Although we are an Irish charity we are in constant contact with our colleagues in Europe , the USA , Australia/New Zealand and Asia . We are members of Retina International, the European Blind Union and the AMD Alliance.

The cure for blindness is in sight! We're getting closer all the time and every cent we raise to fund research takes us that little bit closer. However, there is still serious work to be done. Advances of this kind require breakthroughs in many different scientific fields, including genetics and clinical developments. Research teams in Ireland are at the centre of what is one the world's great endeavours.

International challenges are a great way to see some of the more remote corners of the world while raising much needed funds and awareness of a great cause. The fact that so many of trekkers return year after year is a good indication of what a great experience a Fighting Blindness trek can be. People who support Fighting Blindness are today's visionaries; those who think the impossible and make the difference.
