Bob first visited Japan in 1973. Later graduating from the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies, he taught in Japan before becoming a professional Japanese translator (read more). He has always been drawn to the mountains. In 2003, Bob decided to set up the British company Hike Japan, one way he felt he could use his language and knowledge of the country, whilst sharing his passion for travel.
With help from Japanese guides and many other friends, Bob spent more than seven years developing original tours which explored mountain and country areas rarely visited by westerners. He felt a need to make more of Japan more accessible. Clients who travelled with Hike Japan, and who often came back on other tours, had fantastic holidays. This success encouraged him to move to Japan and, in 2010, set up Quest Japan with Isao Matsuzawa, a travel expert with 35 years experience in the industry.
As well as running the business, one of Bobfs main aims now is to encourage and advise local guides he works with about leading groups from overseas, passing on the knowledge and experience he has gained leading tours over the last decade.
